Samsung Unveils Next-Generation SSDs Ahead of CES
As anticipation builds for CES, Samsung has begun to showcase its latest advancements in solid-state drive (SSD) technology. The company has introduced two innovative SSDs, each targeting distinct markets and use cases. These new releases highlight Samsung’s ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of storage performance and design.
Detachable AutoSSD: A New Approach for Automotive Storage
One of Samsung’s latest offerings is the Detachable AutoSSD, designed specifically for the automotive industry. This SSD utilizes the E1.A form factor and introduces a unique architecture by separating the SSD controller from the NAND flash memory. According to Samsung, this separation enhances heat dissipation, potentially extending the lifespan of the drive and simplifying future upgrades or replacements. While the Detachable AutoSSD is currently aimed at automotive applications, its innovative design could influence storage solutions in other sectors over time.
PM9E1 M.2 2242: High-Performance Storage for Portable Devices
For consumers and enthusiasts, Samsung’s new PM9E1 M.2 22x42 SSD stands out as a significant addition to the company’s lineup. This OEM drive is notable for being among the first M.2 2242 form factor SSDs to support PCIe 5.0, and it is one of the few in this size to feature onboard DRAM. Powered by Samsung’s Presto SSD controller and V8 TLC V-NAND, the PM9E1 delivers impressive read speeds of up to 14.8 GB/s and write speeds of up to 13.4 GB/s.
The PM9E1 will be available in capacities up to 4TB, utilizing a double-sided design with components on both sides of the PCB. While this configuration may present some cooling challenges, it offers substantial storage and performance benefits. This makes the PM9E1 an attractive option for users of portable gaming devices such as the Steam Deck, providing both high-speed data transfer and ample space for large game libraries.
