HW Media Lab Unveils DockFrame: A Customizable USB-C Hub for Framework Expansion Cards
HW Media Lab has recently shared the first images of its DockFrame prototype, generating excitement among tech enthusiasts and the modular hardware community. The prototype features a recognizable cog emblem, hinting at its compatibility with Framework’s popular modular card expansion system. Designed as a highly customizable USB-C hub, DockFrame aims to extend the versatility of Framework’s ecosystem while also supporting a wide range of devices beyond Framework laptops.
Expanding Modular Connectivity Beyond Framework Laptops
Unlike many USB-C hubs on the market, DockFrame is engineered to work seamlessly with Framework’s open-hardware expansion cards. Users can connect up to four hot-swappable cards, allowing for a tailored connectivity experience. Notably, DockFrame is not limited to Framework devices; it can also be used with other computers and even smartphones via USB-C, broadening its appeal to a wider audience seeking modular solutions.
Eleo Basili, co-founder and principal product designer at HW Media Lab, provided insight into the development process: “We’re iterating on the PCB now—power, routing, and port behavior—and we’re incorporating the community’s requirements into the spec.” The team is actively seeking feedback from users, encouraging suggestions through the DockFrame official website to ensure the final product meets real-world needs.
Community-Driven Design and Customization
While DockFrame is not officially affiliated with Framework, it has already captured the attention of connectivity enthusiasts. The design stands out for its colorful and playful decorative themes, reflecting HW Media Lab’s commitment to both function and aesthetics. Framework currently offers 24 different expansion cards, starting at $11, but rising costs for memory kits and graphics modules have made full customization a significant investment for users. DockFrame’s approach offers a flexible and potentially more cost-effective way to expand device capabilities.
At this stage, HW Media Lab has opened a pre-order waiting list for those interested in DockFrame, though pricing and a launch date have yet to be announced.
